Vietnam – Gov’t pushes for two new economic zones in north

The central Government has ordered urgent preparations and paperwork for two new economic zones in the northern border province of Quang Ninh to develop the Northern Focal Economic Zone. In a recent statement, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung asked the Ministry of Planning and Investment to cooperate with Quang Ninh authorities in fulfilling the development schemes for Van Don and Hai Ha economic zones in the province …

… The projects will also help lay the foundation for developing the petrochemical, shipbuilding, power, transportation, and property sectors as well as for tourism.

In the middle of March, Vinashin Group and its consortium began work on the Hai Ha Economic Zone project, which will require a staggering US$15bil.

Quang Ninh, which is part of the Northern Focal Economic Zone, is situated in the heart of two planned economic corridors connecting China’s Kunming and Guangxi with Vietnam’s Northern provinces. (full text).
