Integration declaration adopted at African Union summit

MOSCOW, July 4 (RIA Novosti) – African leaders adopted a declaration on political and economic integration on the continent at an African Union summit in Ghana’s capital Accra held July 1-3, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Wednesday.

The document said the heads of state confirmed their commitment to the concept of establishing a future United States of Africa, thus turning out a compromise between those who urged the immediate creation of a united government and those who wanted to set a longer deadline for the integration process.

“As a step in this direction, it was recognized necessary to work out a concept and practical ways of establishing a future pan-African government,” the ministry said.

Priority was also given to settlement of conflicts in Somali, Sudan, and the Ivory Coast
