250,000 extra will get college grants

More than 250,000 students will get some form of maintenance grant under Government proposals unveiled on Thursday.

About 50,000 students whose parents earn less than Ł25,000 a year will get a full grant – worth more than Ł2,800 per year.

Undergraduates whose household income is less than Ł60,000 a year will be eligible for some form of grant, Universities Secretary John Denham said.

In his first statement to the Commons since taking up his newly created post, Mr Denham said: ‘We are wasting the talents of too many young people for whom university study should be a realistic ambition, not out of reach.

‘Hard-working families on modest incomes have concerns about the affordability of university.’

The extra grants, which will be available to students starting next year, will cost Ł400million a year when they are fully in place, he said. (full text).
