GMO Crop Catastrophe in USA a lesson for EU

As the European Union moves closer to approving the cultivation of GMOs despite stiff widespread opposition, it ought to be paying urgent attention to the agricultural arms race unfolding in the United States. The gospel of high-tech genetically modified (GM) crops is no longer sounding quite so sweet.

Copenhagen and Carbon Trading: Why the commodification of Nature will not solve climate change

Comments Off

Published on Socialist, by Mary Thibodeau, August 2010.

As the Yes Men hoax of the Copenhagen negotiations and environmental justice movements expose Canada’s shameful position on climate change, we are faced with many possible takes on the climate change issue. The Yes Men hoax illuminated Canadian inaction through a fake Environment Canada press release stating that Canada is “taking the long view on the world economy” and reversing its previous woefully inadequate positions on climate change, thereby acknowledging the need to take full responsibility for emissions. Later it emerged that Canada was not, in fact, acknowledging its climate debt to poor nations, and that tar-sand development would continue on as usual. As climate justice movements and the climate debt agents mobilized around the indebtedness issue, others saw ‘hope’ in Obama’s presence at the negotiations … //

WHO Scandal Exposed: Advisors Received Kickbacks From H1N1 Vaccine Manufacturers

Comments Off

Published on Global, by Mike Adams, June 7, 2010.

A stunning new report reveals that top scientists who convinced the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare H1N1 a global pandemic held close financial ties to the drug companies that profited from the sale of those vaccines. This report, published in the British Medical Journal, exposes the hidden ties that drove WHO to declare a pandemic, resulting in billions of dollars in profits for vaccine manufacturers.

Several key advisors who urged WHO to declare a pandemic received direct financial compensation from the very same vaccine manufacturers who received a windfall of profits from the pandemic announcement. During all this, WHO refused to disclose any conflicts of interests between its top advisors and the drug companies who would financially benefit from its decisions. Continue Reading…

Conservation’s poverty reduction claims questioned

Does greater biodiversity help or hinder the world’s poorest people? – Published on, by Natasha Gilbert, 6 May 2010.

The conservation of biodiversity is often touted as a win-win solution both for the environment and for the world’s poorest people, who rely on vanishing natural resources for food and income.

But several studies presented at a meeting of the Zoological Society of London last week challenged the largely anecdotal evidence linking conservation projects with a reduction in poverty. Instead, researchers argued, the financial or employment opportunities that arise from conservation efforts all too often go to more affluent people in local communities. “If poverty reduction is your objective for a conservation project, it’s not a good focus,” says social scientist Craig Leisher, a senior adviser to the Nature Conservancy, a conservation agency in Arlington, Virginia. “There are better ways to do it” … //  Continue Reading…

Glacier Meltdown: Another Scientific Scandal Involving the IPCC Climate Research Group

Published on Global, by by F. William Engdahl , January 23, 2010.

Only days after the failed Copenhagen Global Warming Summit, yet a new scandal over the scientific accuracy of the UN IPCC 2007 climate report has emerged. Following the major data-manipulation scandals from the UN-tied research center at Britain’s East Anglia University late 2009, the picture emerges of one of the most massive scientific frauds of recent history.

Senior members of the UN climate project, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) have been forced to admit a major error in the 2007 IPCC UN report that triggered the recent global campaign for urgent measures to reduce “manmade emissions” of CO2. The IPCC’s 2007 report stated, “glaciers in the Himalayas are receding faster than in any other part of the world.” Given that this is the world’s highest mountain range and meltdown implies a massive flooding of India, China and the entire Asian region, it was a major scare “selling point” for the IPCC agenda. Copenhagen Climate Change Conference

Published on, by Thierry Meyssan, December 20, 2009.

While the overwhelming media campaign is heralding the Copenhagen Climate Change Conference as our last chance to save the planet, Thierry Meyssan considers that, despite appearances, the issues on the table have little to do with environmental concerns but revolve around financial interests instead. According to him, what is in the works is not the creation of a new model of environment-friendly production but the revival of anglo-saxon capitalism. In this first article, he sheds light on a basic misapprehension: there is no scientific consensus emanating from the United Nations. It simply cannot happen in a forum of that nature … //  Continue Reading…

That’s almost 30% of the world’s undernourished population, a share larger than sub-Saharan Africa and twice China’s. More worryingly, it’s a significant increase from the 210 million undernourished people India had at the beginning of the 1990s.

To believe it requires that one ignore the truly inconvenient facts. To take the issue of rising sea levels, these include: that the Arctic was as warm or warmer in 1940; that icebergs have been known since time immemorial; that the evidence so far suggests that the Greenland ice sheet is actually growing on average. A likely result of all this is increased pressure pushing ice off the coastal perimeter of that country, which is depicted so ominously in Mr. Gore’s movie. It is characteristic of the narrow, business-dominated nature of U.S. political culture that the current American health policy debate includes no meaningful discussion of the critical roles the nation’s employment-based health insurance system play in deepening the power of bosses over workers and closing off democratic space.

Think about it. It’s bad enough that working people have to calculate the risks of going without paychecks before daring to challenge their workplace masters to any significant degree. In the U.S., uniquely among modern capitalist democracies, employees also have to factor in the chances of losing health coverage for themselves and their families along with their jobs. Foreclosure Fiasco Continues: The Bush-Obama Strategy of Throwing Billions at Banks Doesn’t Work

Americans are now $14 trillion poorer. Many who thought they were middle class have now joined the ranks of the poor.

It’s not working. The Bush-Obama strategy of throwing trillions at the banks to solve the mortgage crisis is a huge bust. The financial moguls, while tickled pink to have $1.25 trillion in toxic assets covered by the feds, along with hundreds of billions in direct handouts, are not using that money to turn around the free fall in housing foreclosures.

As The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday, “The Mortgage Bankers Association cut its forecast of home-mortgage lending this year by 27% amid deflating hopes for a boom in refinancing.” The same association said that the total refinancing under the administration’s much ballyhooed Home Affordable Refinance Program is “very low.”

Aside from a tight mortgage market, the problem in preventing foreclosures has to do with homeowners losing their jobs. Here again the administration, continuing the Bush strategy, is working the wrong end of the problem.
