Linked on this blog with Stephen Lendman – USA. – Published on The People’s Voice, by Stephen Lendman, February 25, 2011.
The issue is simple and straightforward – organized big money v. organized people essential to beat it. Since February 15, Wisconsin public workers, students, and supporters have sustained heroic resistance against corrupted dark forces determined to crush unionism there and across America. A previous article explained, accessed through the following link:
http://sjlendman.blogspot.com/2011/02/union-busting-in-america.html
The scheme is old, dirty and ongoing – a conspiracy involving corporate bosses, federal, state and local Democrat and Republican leaders, and corrupted union heads to bust unions, effectively depriving workers of collective bargaining and other hard-won gains, returning them to 19th century harshness when they had none.
A Daily chart: If China’s provinces were countries – Comparing Chinese provinces with countries – Published on The Economist, Feb 24, 2011.
China is now the world’s second-biggest economy, but some of its provinces by themselves would rank fairly high in the global league. Our map shows the nearest equivalent country. For example, Guangdong’s GDP (at market exchange rates) is almost as big as Indonesia’s; the output of both Jiangsu and Shandong exceeds Switzerland’s. Some provinces may exaggerate their output: the sum of their reported GDPs is 10% higher than the national total. But over time the latter has consistently been revised up, suggesting that any overstatement is modest … (full text and Chart). Continue Reading…

… What is causing food prices to soar and what can be done about it? – Published on The Economist, Feb 24, 2011.
AROUND the world, the food system is in crisis. Prices have rocketed; they are now higher in real terms than at any time since 1984. They could rise further still if drought lays waste to China’s wheat harvest, as is feared. Food has played some role (how large is hard to tell) in the uprisings in the Middle East. High prices are adding millions to the number who go to bed hungry each night. This is the second price spike in less than four years. Companies are sounding the alarm and the G20 grouping of the world’s largest economies has put “food security” top of its 2011 to-do list … //

USA-based Clitoraid, a non-profit organization launched by the spiritual leader Rael, announced today that it will not only sponsor a number of events around the world for Feb. 6, the United Nations-designated worldwide “Zero Tolerance Day” for the practice of female genital mutilation (FGM) but will also promote the idea of going one step further by declaring the day “Healing Day.”
“More than 130 million women in the world have been genitally mutilated,” said Nadine Gary, spokesperson for Clitoraid. “To prevent this barbaric tradition from happening ever again is definitely important, but we must also think of all the women who had a sexual organ removed and still suffer from that now, both physically and psychologically. It’s possible today to repair the damage done by the mutilation and restore these victims’ dignity and sense of physical pleasure! Laws exist to punish those who still dare to cut children again, so let’s start devoting more effort toward helping the victims and giving them their lives back!”

Exactly five years ago, in February 2006, the GEAB N°2 suddenly encountered worldwide success by announcing the next “Triggering of a major global crisis” characterized especially by “The end of the West as we have known it since 1945”. And exactly two years ago, in February 2009, in the GEAB N°32, LEAP/E2020 anticipated the start of global geopolitical dislocation phase by the end of that same year.

The Wall Street crooks who looted the peoples’ pensions and savings
Published on Global Research.ca, by Ralph Nader, Feb. 18, 2011.
… Corporatism shuts out the people and opens governmental largesse paid for by taxpayers to insatiable corporations.
Notice how each decade the bailouts, subsidies, hand-outs, giveaways, and tax escapes for big business grow larger. The word “trillions” is increasingly used, as in the magnitude of the rescue by Washington of the Wall Street crooks and speculators who looted the peoples’ pensions and savings.
It is not as if these giant companies demonstrate any gratitude to the people who save them again and again. Instead, U.S. companies are fast quitting the country in which they were chartered and prospered. These corporations, which were built on the backs of American workers, are shipping millions of jobs and whole industries to repressive foreign regimes abroad, such as China.
Over 70 percent of Americans in a September 2000 Business Week poll said corporations had “too much control over their lives.” It’s gotten worse with the last decade’s corporate corruption and crime wave. Continue Reading…

Such questions stem from a growing fear that Islamist groups might once again make a serious bid to capture the levers of power in the country. … As a general principle, if inflation expectations increase faster than nominal long-term interest rates, real interest rates, i.e. the real cost of capital for investors and home buyers, would decline and this would, hopefully, stimulate economic activity and employment.
Unfortunately for the Fed, its Nov. 3rd announcement translated into an important loss of confidence in its ability to design and pursue an appropriate monetary policy and was immediately decried by other central banks and by America’s biggest creditor, China, as a blatant attempt to generate and export inflation. Bond prices began immediately to fall and bond yields to rise. It seems that bondholders began selling longer-term Treasuries at a faster rate than the Fed could buy them. Continue Reading…

Abstract: The global financial and economic crisis has produced a powerful shock to the worldview of an influential group of economists whom I call believers in laissez faire (BLF). I provide evidence which suggests that the BLF responded to this shock in a manner that can best be described as irrational, ill-considered and clearly erroneous. I consider the social-psychological concept cognitive dissonance as the best explanatory framework for understanding this response. Cognitive dissonance theory predicts that when real-world events “disconfirm” deeply-held beliefs this creates psychological discomfort in persons and they will respond by means of distortion and denial. - Justice is a key element in the abolition of torture. Torturers must be tried and found guilty, victims must be rehabilitated and compensated.
- However, impunity rules in many countries. There are many reasons for this (a legal system that pledges alliance to the ruling power, generalised corruption, a lack of means and desire to bring about change, …).
- This is why it is important to oversee the drafting and putting in place of binding legal structures on a national and international level … //
